Among the 69 stations of the Nakasendo, in the pure Nakasendo 67 inn (from Itabashi to Moriyama) that pulled out Kusatsu and Otsu-juku shared with the Tokaido, Naraijuku is a post town in the middle of nakasendo, located 34th even if you count from Itabashi-juku on the Edo side or Moriyama-juku on the Kyoto side. The highest altitude of kiso 11 inns, ahead of the difficult Torii Pass, the post town that prospered among many travelers was toned as "Narai Senken". The townscape has been selected as an important preservation district for groups of traditional buildings in Japan, and it has left a strong image of the past.
