Sendai's Hydrangea Temple- Shifukuji This video, "「[4K]Ajisai Temple 仙台のあじさい寺・資福寺に咲く1200株の紫陽花 hydrangea flower in the shifukuji temple, Miyagi Japan」," introduces the Shifukuji Temple, where hydrangeas bloom during Japan's rainy season. Shifukuji Temple, also known as the Hydrangea Temple (あじさい寺, Ajisai-dera), is located in Kitayama, Aoba Ward, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture in the Tohoku region of Japan (Miyagi-ken Sendai-shi Aoba-ku Kitayama). The temple is formally known as the Shiunzan Shifukuji Zen Temple (慈雲山 資福禅寺, Shiunzan Shifukuji-zen-dera) of the Myoshinji Sect of the Rinzai school of Buddhism (臨済宗妙心寺派, Rinzai-shu Myoshinji-ha). As suggested by the name "Hydrangea Temple," Shifukuji Temple is known for its more than 1,200 bunches of blooming hydrangeas. The temple is a popular sightseeing destination in Sendai. An especially popular and Insta-worthy spot is the hydrangea-lined path leading to the sanmon gate. This can be seen at 0:56 in the video. Shifukuji Temple (Hydrangea Temple) has a long and rich history. It was originally constructed in Takahata Town, Yamagata Prefecture (山形県高畠町, Yamagata-ken Takahata-machi) in the Tohoku region of Japan. During the Warring States period (1467~1615), Kosai Soitsu (虎哉宗乙, Kosai Soitsu) became the chief priest of the temple. After Kosai became the educator of Sendai’s feudal lord Date Masamune (伊達政宗, Date Masamune), the temple was moved to Sendai. The ruins of the former Shifukuji Temple can still be found in Takahata Town, along with the graves of Date Masamune’s ancestors and Endo Motonobu (遠藤基信, Endo Motonobu), one of the Date clan’s chief vassals. Shifukuji Temple is also known for the statue of Ninomiya Sontoku (二宮金次郎, Ninomiya Sontoku). Access to Sendai’s Hydrangea Temple Photo:Shifukuji・Hydrangeas Parking spaces are available behind the Main Hall of Shifukuji Temple. However, as the roads leading to the temple are narrow, we recommend that visitors take public transportation such as buses. The peak viewing season for the hydrangeas is late June, and many events, such as matcha-tasting at Shoshoin (小書院, Shoshoin), are held. However, as many visitors congregate during this time, it can be difficult to find a free parking space. In addition, a zen meditation session is held on the 1st of every month. This is also a popular event that draws many visitors. The Hydrangeas of Sendai's Hydrangea Temple Photo:Shifukuji・Hydrangeas Hydrangeas bloom during Japan's rainy season, and appear in shades of white, purple, blue and red from May to July, growing to about 1m to 2m. In Japan, they symbolize both a young girl’s love or persevering love, as well as the opposing meaning of capriciousness and betrayal. The latter meaning is thought to be derived from the fact that the flowers' color changes depending on the quality of the soil. The colorful cluster which is frequently mistaken for flowers is actually the calyx of the hydrangea, with the flower petals hidden in the middle of the cluster. This is where pollination occurs and seeds are formed. The hydrangea is native to Japan, China, Taiwan and South America. They are deciduous shrubs of the Hydrangeacae family, and are also known as the Western hydrangea. The various species of hydrangea include the hydrangea macrophylla f. macrophylla, hydrangea quercifolia, hydrangea serrata, as well as the hydrangea macrophylla f. normalis. Cultivating Hydrangeas Photo:A potted Hydrangea The cultivation and care of hydrangeas is fairly simple, making it great plant even for beginners at gardening. For potting, first cut 2 centimeters off the stem of the hydrangea. Place the cut stem in water for about 30 minutes. In the meantime, place a net at the bottom of the pot, then fill the pot with Kanuma soil or Akadama soil and then moisten it. Next, create an opening to insert the cut stem. In about one month’s time, roots will grow. After the roots have grown sufficiently, transfer the shrub to a large pot. Place the pot in a place with plenty of sunlight, water the shrub frequently, and the hydrangea will grow healthily. View Hydrangeas at Sendai's Hydrangea Temple! Photo:Shifukuji・Hydrangeas How about it? Revitalize yourself and enjoy the sight of colorful hydrangea at the Hydrangea Temple! Furthermore, besides the hydrangea season, during other times of the year, you can enjoy the majestic bamboo forest as well! There is even a goshuin (commemorative seal stamp) available. This can be seen at 1:50 in the video. ◆Shifukuji Temple Overview of Facilities◆ 【Address】〒981-0931 Miyagi Prefecture Sendai City Aoba Ward Kitayama 1-13-1 【Access】12 minutes walking from Kita-Sendai Station on the JR Senzan Line (仙山線 北仙台駅, Senzan-sen Kita-sendai-eki) 【Parking】Free, with around 50 spots available 【Telephone No.】022-234-5730 【Tripadvisor】Shifukuji Temple https://www.tripadvisor.jp/Attraction_Review-g298249-d14920878-Reviews-Shifuku_ji_Temple-Sendai_Miyagi_Prefecture_Tohoku.html -

Autumn Leaves at Entsuin Temple: Video Introduction This video, titled "Entsuin Temple|Autumn Leaves Illumination|Matsushima, Miyagi|2019|Panasonic FZ1000" (円通院 紅葉ライトアップ 松島 宮城 2019 Panasonic FZ1000), was uploaded by "JMF Japan Miyagi Film." It introduces the breathtakingly beautiful autumn foliage illumination event at Entsuin Temple. A Closer Look at Entsuin Temple – Its History and What Makes It Unique Photo:The garden and mausoleum of Entsuin Temple Entsuin Temple is a temple associated with the Date clan, the feudal lords of Sendai, located in Matsushima, Miyagi, in Japan's Tohoku region, a place known as one of the "Three Views of Japan." Entsuin Temple was built in 1647 by Date Tadamune as the mausoleum of Date Mitsumune, the grandson of Date Masamune. Located in the inner part of the temple grounds is a mausoleum from the early Edo period (~1603-1700 AD) which is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Within the grounds of Entsuin Temple, visitors can enjoy several gardens, including a dry landscape garden that depicts Matsushima, a garden designated as a Cultural Property by the Town of Matsushima, a moss garden that takes advantage of the natural beauty of the inner mausoleum, and a garden mainly featuring roses, created by the temple's head priest. Entsuin temple is located just a few minutes' walk from Zuiganji Temple, and as you pass through the temple gate, you'll see many kokeshi dolls that have been used in marriage ceremonies, and enshrined on the back side of the gate is Enmusubi Kannon. Enmusubi Kannon (the Buddhist goddess Avalokiteshvara depicted as a matchmaker) is said to bring together men and women or those who have never had a chance to be together, and is famous as a power spot for marriage. Thus, Entsuin Temple is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Matsushima, together with Zuiganji Temple, a National Treasure. When to See the Autumn Illumination Event at Entsuin Temple + Highlights of the Event Photo:Shinji Pond at Entsuji Temple in Matsushima, Miyagi Entsuin Temple is also known for its beautiful autumn foliage. Every year from late October to late November, when the autumn leaves are at their best, an autumn illumination event takes place. The event is held in the historic Matsushima Rikyu, which is planted with ancient maple trees. In 2022, the event is scheduled to run from Saturday, October 29 to Wednesday, November 30. During this period, visitors can enjoy the fantastic autumn foliage illuminated at various places in the garden. In particular, this year's illumination event also features light-up events at Zuiganji Temple and Entsuin Temple from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM (last admission at 8:45) daily from Saturday, October 29 to Wednesday, November 23. We hope you have a chance to visit Entsuin Temple and enjoy the fantastic autumn leaves as shown in the video. The Rose Garden at Entsuin Temple Photo:The garden of Entsuin Temple Entsuin Temple is famous not only for its autumn foliage but also for its roses, and is also known as "Bara-ji" or "Rose Temple." The origin of this name is that the oldest Western roses in Japan were brought back by Hasekura Tsunenaga of the Date Clan, who traveled to Europe as an envoy during the Keicho Mission to Europe. As a symbol of his achievement, Entsuin Temple created a garden mainly composed of roses. In addition, roses are painted on the zushi (minature shrine) of the inner mausoleum, which is also designated as an Important Cultural Property. Entsuin Temple is a baroque garden born from a fusion of Buddhism and Christianity. The best time to see the roses is in early June, when the roses in the rose garden are in full bloom. However, bloom times vary according to the variety of rose. Traditional Prayer Bead Making Experiences and More! At Entsuin Temple, which is famous for its matchmaking activities, visitors can try their hand at making their own original Buddhist prayer beads. Buddhist prayer beads, called Juzu (数珠) in Japanese, are important Buddhist ritual objects that are worn during funerals, memorial services, visits to graves, and other occasions when one prays to Buddha. It's said that just by holding them, one can rid themself of misfortune and gain peace and tranquility. In the bead making experience, participants can choose their favorite beads and make their own unique prayer beads. The beads are made of natural stone, plastic, and glass, all of which are used to pray and express gratitude to the deity of Entsuin Temple. The process takes 20 minutes, is relatively simple, and does not require an appointment. Entsuin Temple also has its own original shuin stamp books. All of these books are also used to pray and make offerings of gratitude to the main deity of Entsuin temple. By depositing your shuin stamp book at the entrance before visiting the temple, you can receive a shuin stamp when visiting. Sendai's Kokeshi Dolls Photo:Kokeshi doll Kokeshi dolls are popular wooden toys with a simple shape, generally consisting of a spherical head and a cylindrical body, which are used and sold for girls to play with. The body is made in a shape that can be easily held by children. One of the origins of the word, Kokeshi doll is said to be "Kohukeshi," a nickname for them in the Naruko region. Kokeshi dolls have various regional names such as Kiboko, Deku, Kogesu and Hohko. In 1940, at the first local meeting of the Tokyo Kokeshi Society, researchers and artisans debated on the name for the doll and finally decided on "Kokeshi." What is Zao Fox Village? This video, titled "Fox Village in Zao Japan! 蔵王きつね村・kitsune mura," was released by "Rachel & Jun." Located in Shiraishi City, Miyagi Prefecture, in Japan's Tohoku region, Zao Fox Village is a zoo/theme park where the artificial breeding of foxes is conducted, and the park is home to around 250 foxes of six different species. With more than 100 foxes free-ranging and a petting area where even children can safely interact with the various foxes, this is a popular new tourist destination in Miyagi Prefecture that attracts many tourists. A Closer Look at The Foxes of Zao Fox Village and Their Varieties Photo:Red fox Foxes are mammals that are widely distributed throughout Eurasia and the Americas. Let's take a look at the six types of foxes that you can interact with at Zao Fox Village in Miyagi Prefecture. ・Red Fox Generally speaking, when people think of foxes, they think of this type of fox. ・Arctic Fox This is a species of fox that lives in cold regions and has a beautiful pure white coat. ・Sakhalin Fox In Japan, Sakhalin foxes can be found in Hokkaido and became famous through the TV drama "Kita no Kuni Kara" (北の国から, From the Northern Country). ・Silver Fox The silver fox is known for its high-quality fur. However, it's a rare species that has been designated an endangered species due to overhunting and is now being protected. Photo:Platinum fox ・Platinum Fox The platinum fox is very similar to the arctic fox, but this one has a bicolored gray and white coat, making it a very cute fox. ・Japanese Red Fox A subspecies of the red fox that lives only in Japan. They are generally slightly smaller than the common red fox. ・Cross Fox It's a very rare fox, and at first glance it looks like a hyena or a raccoon. It is said to be a mutant species of the Ezo red fox. At Zao Fox Village in Miyagi Prefecture, there is also a veterinary hospital, and the premises are regularly disinfected and checked for insect/parasite eggs, so there's no need to worry about parasites (e.g., echinococcus) when playing with or feeding the foxes and kits. In this video, a tourist to Japan visits Zao Fox Village. At 0:38 in the video, you can see the foxes being pet and interacting with visitors. Winter Is the Best Time To Visit Zao Fox Village Photo:Arctic fox When it gets cold, foxes put on their fluffy winter coats. However, winters in Zao are quite harsh for people, so be sure to wear warm clothes! Summary of Zao Fox Village in Miyagi Prefecture Photo:A fox at Zao Fox Village, Miyagi Prefecture It’s said that foxes live everywhere in Japan, but wild foxes are very wary and rarely seen in daily life. Traditional Japanese Craft - Miyagi Kokeshi Dolls This video, titled "Tewaza 'Traditional Miyagi Kokeshi Dolls'/ Japan Traditional Crafts Aoyama Square" (手技TEWAZA「宮城伝統こけし」miyagi traditional wooden doll/伝統工芸 青山スクエア Japan traditional crafts Aoyama Square) was uploaded by "Japan Traditional Crafts Aoyama Square." This video introduces the production process of Kokeshi dolls, a traditional craft of Miyagi Prefecture in Japan's Tohoku region. There are 11 types of traditional Japanese Kokeshi, and the one shown in the video is called "Naruko Kokeshi." As you can see in the video, an expert craftsmen works in his studio carefully crafting Kokeshi dolls by hand. Surprisingly, Miyagi's traditional Kokeshi Dolls are made by a single craftsman at his Kokeshi studio, and he does every process by himself, from making the wooden base to painting. There is no hesitation in the craftsman's skills and it gives off a relaxing aura. These days, Kokeshi dolls have become a popular souvenir for tourists visiting Japan, so be sure to check them out in this video. The History and Culture of Kokeshi Dolls Source :YouTube screenshot The name "Naruko Kokeshi" comes from the cute Japanese onomatopoeic sound it makes when you turn its head. In the past, every family had at least one Kokeshi doll, but let's take a quick look at the history and culture of Miyagi's Kokeshi dolls. Kokeshi dolls are ancient, dating back approximately 1,300 years ago, during the reign of Emperor Shotoku, when they were used to hold Dharani sutras for buddhists. Since there were one million of these sutras, the Kokeshi Dolls were called Hyakumanto Darani (One Million Pagodas and Dharani Prayers). Later, during the reign of Emperor Seiwa, the first prince, Prince Koretaka Shinnou learned how to use a potter’s wheel in Omi, and taught it to woodworkers. It is said that the crafts made by the woodworkers which spread from Japan's Kanto region to the Tohoku region were the origin of today's traditional Kokeshi dolls. Although it has a strong image as a toy for girls to play with, it is a traditional culture that has developed along with the history of Japan. Kokeshi Dolls - A Traditional Craft that Symbolizes Miyagi's Folk Art Culture Source :YouTube screenshot It's said that this culture was created to provide souvenirs for people visiting the region for hot-spring therapy or vacation, as the Tohoku region is known for its poor winter industries due to deep snow and difficulty growing crops. Kokeshi Dolls took their present form 283 years ago, during the Edo period (1603 to 1868 A.D.). There are eleven types of Kokeshi in Japan, and the five types of Kokeshi, shown below, are widely produced in Miyagi. Miyagi's traditional Kokeshi dolls are a traditional craft that has supported the development of Miyagi. Kokeshi Dolls - Five Types of Miyagi Prefecture's Traditional Craft Source :YouTube screenshot Below are five types of Kokeshi dolls: -Naruko Kokeshi -Sakunami Kokeshi -Togatsuta Kokeshi -Yajiro Kokeshi -Hijiori Kokeshi The characteristic of the Naruko Kokeshi dolls introduced in the video is that they "give the image of old-fashioned Japanese beauty." One Miyagi's famous hot spring resorts is called Naruko, and surprisingly, it'is said that the name originates from Naruko Kokeshi dolls. This shows how important a traditional craft Kokeshi dolls were for the Tohoku and its harsh climate. The Traditional Japanese Art "Tokiwa Kongatazome" This video "Miyagi Prefecture, Tokiwa Kongatazome" ( 宮城県 常盤紺型染(ときわこんがたぞめ)), was created by "Tohoku STANDARD." The woman featured in the video is Kuniko Sasaki, a craftswoman who works at the Natoriya Dyeing Factory, a dye shop in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture in Japan's Tohoku region. The video is an interview where she speaks about how she encountered the traditional art and craft Tokiwa Kongatazome (常盤紺型染), as well as its origin and traditions. The Traditional Japanese Art and Craft "Tokiwa Kongatazome" Source :YouTube screenshot Tokiwa Kongatazome is a technique of stencil dyeing born in the late Edo period (1750 ~1850), and developed in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. At that time, Tohoku did not have Kasuri-weaving (a textile technique in which patterns were woven using thread dyed in different colors), so people came up with the idea of creating a paper stencil based on the design patterns of Kasuri instead. It came to be called Tokiwa Kongatazome. The technique of Tokiwa Kongatazome was passed on from the dye shop "Mogamiya" (最上屋) in Akita prefecture to dye shops in Sendai city. People loved its warm fuzzy feeling and gorgeous patterns, and it made great strides from the Meiji era (1868~1912) to the early Showa era (1930~). One of its features is that it can be mass produced, unlike textiles. Tokiwa Kongatazome originated in Yokota city in Akita prefecture (Tohoku region) but developed in Sendai city in Miyagi prefecture. Source :YouTube screenshot The products dyed with the Tokiwa Kongatazome technique are called "Sendai Yukata" and are loved all over Japan. It initially only used deep blue colors for dyeing so it was named "Tokiwa 'Kon' gata" (Kon 紺, meaning "navy blue" in Japanese), but now it uses multiple colors so people sometimes call it somply "Tokiwagata" (without the kanji for navy blue). After World War II, Japanese fashion changed from Wafuku (Japanese-style) to Yofuku (Western-style), causing the Tokiwa Kongatazome technique to lose popularity. However, the dye shop "Natoriya Dyeing Factory" (名取屋染工場) uses Tokiwa Kongatazome in products like "Tenugui" (Hand towels), "Noren" (traditional Japanese fabric dividers hung on/between walls), flags, curtains, banners, "Hanten" (short, Japanese-style winter coats), and other small items. How It's Made: Tokiwa Kongatazome Stencil Dyeing Source :YouTube screenshot As it shows in the video around 0:41, first you put a Tokiwa Kongatazome stencil on a white fabric and apply starch. The starched area is going to be left white after the fabric is dyed, forming a pattern on the cloth. An example of this stencil dyeing is shown in the video around 1:49. A technique called "Itoire" (Inserting threads into a paper-stencil) is used to create a paper-stencil. This technique allows for the design of more intricate patterns. As you can tell by watching the video, everything is handcrafted by professionals. Summary of Tokiwa Kongatazome Source :YouTube screenshot Kuniko Sasaki of the "Natoriya Dyeing Factory" says in the interview that she started Tokiwa Kongatazome because she found stencils that were more than 100 years old when she was cleaning out her warehouse roughly 20 years ago, and she thought it would be a shame to lose the traditional craft. Feeling this, she decided she wanted to pass on the spirit of the craftsmen before her. Tokiwa Kongatazome products are also available online. The popular hand towels are available for purchase for around 1,000 yen (~$10 USD). Tokiwa Kongatazome is also popular among younger people and foreigners.
