Japan's Temple & Shrine Carpenters This video, titled "In Japan, Repairing Buildings Without a Single Nail," was uploaded by "Great Big Story." It introduces a traditional Japanese temple and shrine carpenter, called "Miyadaiku" (宮大工) in Japanese, from Kamakura (鎌倉). Japanese temple and shrine carpenters specialize in temples and shrines and construct/repair traditional buildings. Some of the craftsmen work on the construction and repair of historical buildings, such as Japan's national treasures and world heritage sites. Japan's temple and shrine carpenters must possess a high-level of skill and knowledge to repair traditional buildings. A building repaired by Japan's Miyadaiku carpenters allows the beautiful architecture of Japan to remain the work of art that it is. This article covers some of the amazing traditional techniques of Japan's temple and shrine carpenters and their journey to becoming full-fledged craftsmen. Kigumi - A Traditional Carpentry Technique Used by Japan's Miyadaiku Carpenters Photo:Kigumi, traditional Japanese architecture Some wooden architecture in Japan, including temples and shrines, is built by assembling wooden materials together as though it were one large 3d puzzle. This method is called the "Kigumi" method, meaning "wooden framework." This impressive craftsmanship can be seen from 0:21 in the video. The traditional skill of framing and jointing wood, characterized by very precise cutting and coupling of wood, requires countless hours of training and experience as a Miyadaiku carpenter. Traditional Japanese architecture is made possible thanks to the high-quality craftsmanship of Japan's temple and shrine carpenters. The Long Road to Becoming a Miyadaiku Carpenter Photo:A wooden shrine, traditional Japanese architecture Acquiring the skills of a Miyadaiku carpenter requires on-the-job training, so the first step is to become an apprentice at a workshop or construction firm and learn the repair processes and traditional methods used by observing the skills of a master Miyadaiku carpenter up close. The history of Miyadaiku carpenters dates back more than a thousand years. In the past, Japan's temple and shrine carpenters were referred to as "Wataridaiku," and they lived in areas with many shrines and temples, working from one location to the next. Miyadaiku carpenters also repair historic World Heritage buildings and prominent national treasures, such as the one's you'd find in Kyoto. Thus, Miyadaiku carpenters are required to have advanced knowledge in various fields, not just architecture, but religious studies as well. Summary of Japan's Traditional Miyadaiku Carpenters Photo:A wooden temple being built Miya-Daiku carpenters have been repairing Japan's temples and shrines since ancient times with their advanced skills that can be used to construct wooden buildings without the use of nails. This traditional Japanese culture is handed down from one generation of craftsmen to the next. It's no secret that all of Japan's beautiful temples and shrines look like the amazing works of art they art thanks to the amazing craftsmanship of Japan's Miyadaiku carpenters. -

Unshoji Temple in Oga, Akita: Video Introduction This video, titled "[4K] A Temple Where Hydrangeas in All Shades of Blue Bloom Across the Precincts: Oga, Akita|nippon.com" (【4K】青一色の紫陽花(あじさい)が境内一面に咲き誇る寺:秋田県男鹿市| nippon.com), was uploaded by "nippon.com." The 1,500 hydrangeas that cover the temple grounds, also known as 'Blue Heaven,' make Unshoji a popular spot in Oga, Akita. It was also selected as one of "The Best Scenery in Japan" in 2017. Hydrangeas at Unshoji Temple Photo:Hydrangeas at Unshoji Temple, Oga, Akita The highlight of Unshoji Temple is the beautiful blue world that can be seen there. On a clear day, the blue of the cloudless sky, the blue of the sea in Oga, and the blue of the hydrangeas at Unshoji Temple all combine to create a unique view that you won't find anywhere else. Hydrangeas at Unshoji Temple, also known as "hydrangea temple," date back to when the temple's deputy chief priest was captivated by the beauty of a single hydrangea that was blooming quietly in a corner of the temple's grounds. After seeing this he began to take cuttings and plant the hydrangea to the delight of his parishioners and local residents. After 15 years, the hydrangea bloomed like a carpet of blue, moving the hearts of all who saw it. At night, when the hydrangeas are lit up, their blue color becomes deeper and more beautiful than in the daytime, creating fantastic scenery. The best time to view the hydrangeas is usually from mid-June to early July, and they are in full bloom in late June. [Video] 0:55 - Hydrangeas Lit Up at Unshoji Temple Unshoji Temple and Highlights of the Temple Photo:A cute Jizo statue at Unshoji Temple, Oga, Akita Usually in June and July, the precincts of Unshoji Temple are filled with vivid blue hydrangeas. Even before you pass through the temple gate, you'll be overwhelmed by their beauty, and your soul will be spirited away. Now we'll introduce some of the other highlights of Unshoji Temple besides the hydrangeas. Unshoji Temple belongs to the Soto sect of Japanese Buddhism. The temple was founded in 1624 (early Edo period). In the main hall, there are statues of the Gautama Buddha, Kannon, the Goddess of Compassion, Bodhidharma, and Manjushri. In addition to the joint tomb of the statues of Kannon and Kshitigarbha, the temple grounds are dotted with photogenic spots where you can take great pictures for Instagram, including elegant bamboo groves, Japanese umbrellas (wagasa), and the view from the observation deck. There are also "heart stones" in seven locations around the temple, which are said to grant wishes if found, and the gentle-looking Smiling Jizo. Be sure to check them out when you visit. [Video] 1:26 - Smiling Jizo Charms and Souvenirs at Unshoji Temple Charms and other souvenirs, like shuin stamps available only at Unshoji Temple, are also popular. One charm containing a single hydrangea petal costs 700 yen. Hydrangeas are believed to ward off evil spirits, prevent women from getting sick, bring families together, and bring good luck. There are three types of shuin stamps available at Unshoji Temple, all Hydrangea-themed, and they can be purchased for 500 yen each. However, during the hydrangea viewing period, there are special shuin stamps you can collect as well. Summary of Unshoji Temple, a Hydrangea Temple in Akita, Japan Photo:Hydrangeas at Unshoji Temple, Oga, Akita The deputy chief priest of Unshoji Temple spent 15 years painstakingly cultivating the hydrangeas, and this 4K video enhances their beauty and transports the viewer into a fantastical world. The Diamond Route Connecting Fukushima, Tochigi and Ibaraki Prefectures This video, titled "【4K】Nature & Gastronomy : Diamond Route Japan 2019 - Fukushima, Tochigi, Ibaraki |" was released by Diamond Route Japan. Nobu Matsuhisa runs many Japanese restaurants around the world. In this video, Nobu Matsuhisa travels to Fukushima, Tochigi, and Ibaraki prefectures to review tourist attractions that are rich with local history and Japanese culture. Popular Tourist Destinations in Fukushima Prefecture Two of the best places to visit in Fukushima Prefecture are Ouchi-juku in the Minamiaizu District of Fukushima Prefecture and Aizu-Wakamatsu Castle (Tsurugajo) in Aizu-Wakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture. These two sites, both of which preserve the landscape of Japan's Edo period, attract more than a million history buffs each year. In Ouchi-juku, there are restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy the delicious local cuisine. Ouchijuku's specialty, "Takato Soba," is a unique dish in which "magari-negi" (a type of curved green onion) are used like chopsticks to eat handmade soba noodles. Kitakata ramen is another local specialty of Fukushima Prefecture. Kitakata ramen is a local dish that is loved all over Japan and is one of the three major ramen of Japan. Kitakata Ramen is a shoyu (soy sauce) flavored pork-based ramen that originated in Kitakata City, Fukushima Prefecture, and is characterized by its light flavor. Popular Sightseeing Spots in Tochigi Prefecture The most famous tourist attraction in Tochigi Prefecture is the World Heritage Site "Nikko Toshogu Shrine." Nikko Toshogu Shrine located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, is a shrine and temple dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. The shrine is steeped in history and is said to have been built in 1617. It's a famous place where visitors can enjoy historical Japanese traditions and culture. Utsunomiya gyoza is the specialty of Tochigi Prefecture. Utsunomiya City in Tochigi Prefecture is one of the largest consumers of gyoza (pot stickers) in Japan, and almost all gourmets visiting Utsunomiya City come in search of "Utsunomiya Gyoza." Utsunomiya gyoza is characterized by its high vegetable and low meat and garlic content, which gives the gyoza a better texture and richer flavor. As a result, even those who don't like the rich taste of gyoza and generally find it too heavy, can enjoy eating it. Utsunomiya gyoza is generally sold at a low price throughout Utsunomiya City, and it's often eaten like fast food in the local area. Popular Tourist Attractions in Ibaraki Prefecture Hitachi Seaside Park in Hitachinaka City, Ibaraki Prefecture, is one of Japan's premier leisure facilities for raising plants. The 500 sq. acre park is home to seasonal plants, such as tulips in the spring and sunflowers in the summer, as well as attractions like a large Ferris wheel, making it a fun facility for the whole family! Ibaraki Prefecture is home to many nationally famous local dishes, the most popular of which is natto (fermented soybeans). Mito Natto, a specialty of Mito City, Ibaraki, is a historical dish loved by the locals. Foreign tourists may have some reservations about it, but we definitely recommend trying it if you're visiting Mito, Ibaraki. Summary of the Diamond Route Connecting Fukushima, Tochigi, and Ibaraki Prefectures Fukushima, Tochigi, and Ibaraki prefectures are close to Tokyo, making them great places to visit even on a day trip. They are especially popular with tourists looking to experience Japanese history and culture. Be sure to check them out if you have the chance! -

What is Mt. Nokogiri? This video, titled "'Breathtaking views at Nokogiri mountain known as saw-tooth mountain' Promotion movie【2017】," was directed by Chiba Prefectural Government. It introduces Mt. Nokogiri (鋸山, Nokogiriyama). Mt. Nokogiri, sitting on the border between Kyonan Town (鋸南町, Kyonanmachi) and Futtsu City (富津市, Futtsushi) in Chiba Prefecture, gets its name from its saw-like spiky ridge-lines. A breathtaking panorama opens itself up to you from the 329-meter-tall peaks. Photo:Mt. Nokogiri If you’re lucky with weather, you can enjoy Mt. Fuji (富士山, Fujisan), Mt. Amagi (天城山, Amagiyama) and Oshima (大島, Oshima) on the Pacific, in a single sight. The nearby "Three Great Mountains of Awa" (安房三名山, Awasanmeizan), Mt. Tomi-san, Mt. Gotemba (御殿場山, Gotembasan), and Mt. Iyo (伊予ヶ岳, Iyogatake), are a sight to behold. Immerse yourself in the pre-experience of hiking & mountaineering by watching the video! Enjoy the Beautiful Scenery of Mt. Nokogiri While Hiking The main attraction of Mt. Nokogiri is hiking & mountaineering. Mt. Nokogiri Nihon Temple (鋸山日本寺, Nokogiriyamanihonji), located on Mt. Nokogiri, is the oldest imperial temple in Kanto, founded through an order given by the emperor roughly 1,300 years ago. Within its vast realm, one of its routes contains various tourist attractions such as the biggest stone-made Buddha in Japan, Sengohyaku Rakan, and the “View of Hell.” A relatively small mountain, at just 329 meters, you can casually enjoy hiking & mountaineering with a route that takes you to the peak within a couple of hours. Some routes are unpaved, and it's recommended that you climb with clothes that are easy to move in with suitable hiking shoes on. Mt. Nokogiri is a part of "Kanto Fureai Trail" (関東ふれあいの道, Kanto Fureai no Michi) a long natural hiking-course passing through the 7 Prefectures in Kanto. The course is 1,799 km long, and lets you indulge in the beauty of nature around Kanto, connecting Mt. Takao (高尾山, Takaosan), Okutama, Chichibu, Mt. Tsukuba (筑波山, Tsukubasan), Kujukuri Beach (九十九里浜, Kujukurihama), Boso, Miura Peninsula (三浦半島, Miurahanto) and Tanzawa. Source :YouTube screenshot A spot you cannot miss in Mt. Nokogiri is Hyakushaku-Kannon (Buddha), the guardian of safe travels. The Kannon, at 30.3 meters tall, was carved out of stone over a 6 year period. You can watch this from 1:16 in the video. Sengohyaku Rakan is the most prominent sacred place dedicated to Rakan, in the world, replete with Buddha sculptures carved by the most eminent sculptors of the Edo period. You can watch this from 0:56 in the video. There are more than 1,500 stone Buddhas, none of which have the same expression. In the Buddha plaza sits the tallest Buddha in Japan, towering at a height of 31.05 meters. He welcomes numerous visitors with his 6.5 meter face and 608 hair spirals. Photo:Mt. Nokogiri Observatory The main attraction of the course is the Peak Observatory. The observatory is on the outcropped rock sticking out of the cliff and is known as the “View of Hell.” If you're brave enough, take a peek down from this thrilling observatory. The video introduces this from 1:52. Even just seeing it in the video is a powerful experience. The mountain is also popular for watching sunsets and sunrises. The Ropeway Makes Mt. Nokogiri Accessible to All! The ropeway provides a good alternative to cars to reach the peak. Enjoy a leisurely 4 minute ride on the ropeway to Mt. Nokogiri. The video shows the view from the ropeway at 0:18. Take home the beauty of the colorful autumn leaves through the lifelong memories you'll make here. Summary of Mt. Nokogiri A series of works titled ‘Fuji Sanjurokkei,’ developed during the Edo period by Ukiyoe artist Hiroshige Utagawa, depicts the lively mountain with the title ‘Awa Nokogiriyama’. This suggests that Mt. Nokogiri was a sacred property, worshipped locally in ancient times. The Kyonan, Futtsu, and Fuppo area, in which Mt. Nokogiri sits, is known as a port city along the Tokyo Bay, and restaurants provide cuisine with fresh fish. Mt. Nokogiri is not only a site of beautiful landscape, but also an indispensable tourist attraction in Chiba where you can enjoy its history, art, the local cuisine and hot springs. The video introduces many of the tourist attractions along the hiking course of Mt. Nokogiri, as well as information on photogenic sights perfect for your Instagram. Fukuyama castle (福山城, fukuyamajou) was built as a base for the Tokugawa Shogunate in the west of Japan and the city quickly developed around it.
