[English/日本語] Things that Surprised International Students When They Came to Japan: Food For international students, the first problem they encounter when they arrive in Japan is food. In this article, we will introduce Japanese food. What is this? Food I saw for the first time in a Japanese supermarket (1)Mushrooms and seaweed I was once asked about mushrooms by a Mongolian student. The Mongolian diet is basically meat-based and they eat very few vegetables. Among other things, they do not have the custom of eating mushrooms and were surprised to see mushrooms for the first time in Japan. In addition to mushrooms, foreign students often ask me questions about seaweed. I taught her how to cook mushrooms and seaweed, and she lost 44 pounds in a year! Now she has confidence in herself and does selfie every day. I was attracted by the smell.... The story of gaining weight from eating too much delicious food. 1) Ramen The number one thing that male students get addicted to when they come to Japan is ramen. Seeing the lines at popular ramen restaurants, some students may say, "It's strange that Japanese people want to wait in line to eat ramen," but after six months in Japan, they are standing in line for it. There are also many students who stock a lot of cup ramen in their rooms because it is cheap and quick to eat. However, some ramen soups are made with pork or beef, so if you are not allowed to eat ramen due to religious beliefs, please ask the store owner. One of our students even called a cup ramen company to ask about it. Let's learn the kanji for "pig(豚)" and "cow(牛)" as soon as possible. 2) Bread The number one thing that female students get addicted to when they come to Japan is bread. Although Japan is famous for its rice diet, bread consumption is one of the highest in the world. In fact, there are many bakeries in the city, and many people are drawn to the smell of bread and buy it. Also, convenience stores sell a wide variety of breads, all reasonably priced in the 100 yen range! Sweet breads are especially popular among female students, and I often see them eating them for breakfast and lunch. The sweet breads are especially popular among female students, and I often see them eating them for breakfast and lunch. Too expensive to buy! Beware of vitamin deficiency 1) Fruits Students from all countries say, "Fruit is expensive! ". Because of this, students eat less fruit than they did in their home countries, and many of them catch colds or have skin problems due to vitamin deficiency. For this reason, many students ask their families in their home countries to send them vitamin supplements. Please consider supplements as part of your luggage list before you come to Japan. I hope this article will help you prepare for your arrival in Japan. By the way, our school has a supermarket within a minute's walk from the dormitory. Also, in Hachioji, where our school is located, there is the famous Hachioji Ramen and a bakery with a long line of customers. If you are ever in Hachioji, be sure to stop by!

Cool photo, this reminds me of the street car in Arakawa and the one in Hakodate as well. I didn't realize there was so few street cars left in Japan until recently. I saw somewhere about someone hyping up riding the street car in Arakawa and having ridden it several times myself I was kind of surprised I'd never realized that it's not very common in Japan anymore. I know there's the one in Enoshima as well but unfortunately I didn't learn about it until I'd already traveled there so I'll need to go back again so I can catch a ride under it. There's more stuff I want to do around the island anyways and there's a ton of great places to grab some food as well. This streetcar has some interesting designs on it though, can't make out what they are unfortunately but it looks nice. I'd like to go for a ride on it and I need to visit Nagasaki anyways so I guess it works out!

That is one beautiful looking chandelier. I can imagine it cost quite a bit of money. Incidentally I'd never seen the kanji for Yebisu before, nor had I heard of Yebisu Garden Place. Looks like a really awesome place to go for dinner or lunch as it has some nice restaurants and cafes (both high-class and reasonably priced which is nice). Probably be nice to go for a date actually. Do some shopping and then stop by for dinner or even just go for lunch and then walk around the area and see everything there is. I guess there's an art museum and a theatre as well, so yeah this place is like a 10/10 for going on dates probably lol. I'd like to check out the beer museum personally; sounds pretty interesting and you can get samples too if you pay a small fee it looks like

What an awesome gate. I can't remember if it's the same place, but I think I went here a few years ago, I went to several different areas and I'm pretty sure this is one of them. Either way, if I did go I'm certain I wasn't able to climb the stairs of the gate. I'd love to see the inside of it though. I guess it was built a little more than 200 years ago according to an article I was looking at. Also there are two statues of Nio on the other side, so I'm almost certain this was the place I visited, although I wasn't able to go to the main temple as it was getting late I believe. I'll have to go back to see it. I always hear how cool Setagaya is anyways and I never get a chance to go out there. Golden Week plans maybe?

What an interesting photo... I don't usually associate the buddha with being cute, but this one deserves an exception I suppose lol. Something about the way he's standing and just saying "hey" is really intriguing. It's a really interesting decoration for a chozuya as well. I can't read cursive to save my life, but I think it says something about the Amitabha Buddha? I can only make out the first character and I think it's a longer sutra maybe. Anyways, I've never been to Taisho Temple, it looks like it has a lot of interesting history to enjoy though. It looks like it'd be a nice play to go on a slightly warm day when the cherry blossoms are out, just like in this photo.
